We have all heard about the Minotaur and of the labyrinth in Crete. If you’re not sure what it is, it’s the source of two major myths: that of Dedalus and Icarus and of Theseus and the Minotaur.

In a nutshell, this is how they go. Daedalus constructed a huge labyrinth for the King of Crete to put the Minotaur in. This was a half man half bull creature born because of the wrath of the Gods at the King. Jealous because of Daedalus’ intelligence and success, the King eventually had the architect and his son, Icarus, trapped in the labyrinth with the vicious Minotaur. But Daedalus knew every corner or the labyrinth and was able to find a way out. On trying to escape the island he crafted two pairs of wings, made of feathers put together with wax. Deadalus made it out of the island just fine but Icarus, against his father’s advice, flew too close to the Sun, which melted his wings and made him fall into the ocean and die.

The story of Theseus tells the death of the Minotaur. The young Theseus is taken to the labyrinth to serve as a sacrifice to the monster. But because he wins the love of the Princess of Crete, she aids him in escaping the labyrinth, but not before killing the Minotaur.

These two myths have been the source and inspiration to many works of art and many books and poems. And what better way to see and feel the inspiration up close than to spend some holidays in Crete? Crete holidays may not be among the most famous, especially if we compare the island with more popular islands in the Mediterranean Sea, like Ibiza and Santorini. But it’s well worth it, as Crete is one of the best kept secrets of the Mediterranean Sea.

Finding cheap holidays in Greece, and in particular in Crete, isn’t something that people find easy. You do need to look around quite a lot. And this is in part due to the fact that the Greeks themselves travel quite a lot along their country and especially to their islands and they take most of the cheap deals right away. Using a website like dealchecker.co.uk for cheap holidays is the best choice in this case, as you’ll be able to look into flights and hotel bookings, but also package deals and cheap options for your stay.
